T.K. Schonhoff  April 5th 2000

I bought one of these things ten years ago and despite twice replacing it with big, traditional-looking (and very expensive) grills I keep coming back to this one. In fact, when we bought our latest one at a local fireplace/grill store, the owner just couldn’t stop talking about this cheap little grill. He confided to me in a low voice that if I were to lift the lid of his own $2500 home gas barbecue, I’d find this little gem sitting inside because it’s all he uses too.

Why? It’s not ease of cleaning or durability or any of that stuff (they rust out after a few years sitting on the porch). And you’d better buy a big propane bottle with an adapter hose if you don’t want to those little gas cylinders to suddenly empty out on you mid-meal while you’re cooking for guests… No, the reason I adore this is that it just plain grills better than anything else on the market – and we’ve tried a lot of them.

My wife, the culinary school grad, thinks it’s the “flavorizer” that does it (the metal pan that replaces those awful lava rocks). When we grill salmon we just cover that metal pan with alderwood chips and let the smoke penetrate the fish while it grills with the lid on tight – flat out beating every restaurant or neighborbood grilled fish ever made. Friends of mine simply won’t cook salmon for us.

Even though we virtually never clean the thing, it simply does the best job flavor-wise of all our grills. If you crank it up to high for 10 minutes, then grill with the top closed (never open) you get very consistent heat which is the secret to good grilling.

Some cookbook author who writes barbecue books constantly repeats the phrase “Know Your Fire” like a mantra. This fire is 100% consistent, heats up in minutes (again, no lava rocks to soak up heat) and produces superb results for us. If you know your fire, this is the fire to know.

Grill Man “Rick” July 1st 2009

I had never heard of the O-Grill until just before I made my purchase. I had been looking at the Coleman Roadtrips and Weber Qs. The first thing that caught my eye was the design. It looks different, it’s light (under 25lbs), and feels very well built. Unlike the Colemans and Webers that are basically just slimmed down versions of a larger grill, this grill looks like it was built from the ground up to be portable, easy to carry and easy to setup(it even has acompartment for storing your cooking utensils). The vertical carrying position is similar to a notebook computer case or a small suit case. The weight is also very comfortable. Setting the grill up takes about two minutes. The only things to do are extending the legs and inserting the gas tank. The 225 sq inch cooking surface is larger than you would expect from a grill this size. After reading several horror stories about the Coleman Roadtrip grill handles melting and covers distorting after closing the lid, I was happy to see the instructions actually told me to set the heat on high and close the lid during the preheat cycle. The O-Grill cover does get hot to the touch, but I have never seen any problem with melting or distortion of metal. This grill’s single 9450 BTU burner produces more than enough heat for your average barbeque. The heat seems uniform over all of the cast iron cooking surface. Cleanup is also very easy. The smooth bowl shape of the inside of the grill means there are very few areas for grease to hide. I just use a paper towel and some soapy water to get grill looking good as new.

Pros – Easy to carry around
- Easy to setup
- Very well built (everything feels tight when using or carrying it around)
- Cooks efficiently
- Cleans easily

Cons – Price (typically $160 to $190)
- The company, Pro-Iroda’s web page is very basic. The O-Grill is completely absent from their Technical Support section.

I spent hours researching portable gas grills looking for good heat, features, ease of use, and portability. Then I gave my wife the link and told her that’s what I wanted for Christmas. Good wife that she was, she ordered it for me. Wow! Coleman did a really good job designing this grill. It’s a heavy and large portable grill, that folds down into a cart, so you can wheel it around. When ready, just lift it up and the handle and wheels become it’s stand.

It comes with 2 grill grates, but can accept interchangeable surfaces, so you can grill with grates, fry with a griddle, or use pots and pans with a stove grate. Since there are two, you can mix and match. Want breakfast? Use the griddle to cook up some bacon and eggs, and the stove grate to brew up a pot of coffee. Lunch? Use the griddle and make up some cheesesteaks or fajitas. Dinner? Fire up the grill and cook up a nice steak.

The grill uses standard portable propane cylinders of either type available anywhere. It even comes with two table surfaces that slide out from either side, and hooks to hang your tools on.

The Roadtrip Grill comes with 2 separate burners, each with it’s own control. The grill ignites the burners with a push of a button and the burners themselves generate a lot of heat. I usually end up cooking on medium, because cooking on high results in very charred foods. High praise for a portable grill that runs from a small propane cylinder. The grill surfaces are intelligently designed, so they cover the burner so grease and drippings don’t clog the burner, but there’s still plenty of area around it for the raw heat to come out. The grease and drippings do go down to the bottom, but it’s a pretty easy clean up. If there’s a lot, it will drip down into a little drawer underneath that just slides out for dumping.

Many have commented about it not being safe to cook with the lid down, as the handle may melt. Indeed the warning label warns you not to do so. I was very aware of this, and experimented. In my case I was able to cook just fine with the lid down with the heat on medium. I will continue to cook with the lid down where appropriate, but I will be very mindful of it and check the handle temp often.

This is really intelligently designed for a portable grill. I am already envisioning wheeling this thing everywhere. And why not? It’s so easy. I can’t imagine why people are paying $40 or more for the Weber Q, with hardly any of the features.

Weber Baby Q (Q 100) Portable Gas Grills

Weber Baby Portable Gas GrillsSo the Weber Baby Q portable gas grill is the one my wife and I ended up buying.  and we are quite happy with this little gem.  The total cooking area is only 189 square inches but is plenty of room we have discovered. It’s hard to believe that a grill just 14 inches tall could offer 189 square inches of cooking space, but it’s true. Like all Weber grills and bbq’s it has a cast aluminum lid and body with an 8,500 BTU-per-hour input.  The burner is stainless steel and tubular.  And with the lid open it measures 14-1/8 by 27-1/8 by 16 inches.  It has a heat resistant handle also.  The Baby Q is fueled by a standard 14.1 ounce propane cylinder (sold separately).

The grill ignites at the push of a button for reliable lighting, and an infinitely adjustable burner valve with a high-quality regulator makes it easy to control the heat.  The grill operates on a standard 14.1- or 16.4-ounce propane cylinder. Propane does not come included, but Weber does enclose a Weber Q cookbook of recipes and inspiration.

Portable Gas Grills – Ease of Use

So the whole reason this blog started on portable gas grills was because my wife, Jenny, and I were planning a big camping trip with our friends and no one had a grill. We were going deep down a hiking trail that did not supply marked campsites that would normally have fire pits already built into the sites. So we started perusing all the grill and BBQ sites online and made several trips to the local hardware and outdoors stores until we found one that met our needs. We looked at Lynx gas grills, Weber gas grills, DCS gas grills, portable charcoal grills, Ducane gas grills, Coleman portable grills….you name it, we checked them out.

For some reason Jenny and I started to become a little obsessed about the whole shopping experience. I mean how hard could it be to find portable gas grills that suited us. Jenny wanted a small shiny, stainless steel one…while I wanted the big coleman road trip one….oh how the debate went on and on.  My brother said to stay with Coleman portable gas grills cause they were the name campers most trusted but with all these new companies coming out with great products we found ourselves spinning our wheels.  Finaly we settled on Jenny’s choice…a small Weber Baby Q (Q 100) Portable Gas Grill.  I do have to admit it is kind of cute…

So what you will find on this blog about portable gas grills is what we found to be the top 5 after doing our due diligence of research.  Hopefully it will help you make your decision a lot easier when it comes time to buy.
